4. Review

Typically, Korean dramas spend the first two to three episodes introducing the characters and building up for the plot. This can make the beginning somewhat tedious and drawn-out, but this drama's powerful plot and fast-paced pace made it easy to immerse yourself in the drama from the very first episode. Above all, Hwang Jung-eum, who usually plays comedic characters in sitcoms, delivered a truly melodramatic performance that surpassed expectations. She perfectly portrayed the process of a woman who loves a man and sacrifices for him like any other couple, but then falls into despair after being betrayed by the person she loved most, with a poignant and tearful performance. She particularly excelled in portraying the character who falls in love with someone she shouldn't have, amidst the chaos of the unfolding truth from the middle of the drama. Ji-sung's portrayal of the loss of a loved one and the burning desire for revenge was also exceptional. Although he was a typical second-generation chaebol heir seen in other dramas, he constantly faced the challenges of reality and struggled, demonstrating a realistic character who set him apart from other chaebols. The story itself was unique, with the female protagonist being sent to prison from the beginning, which I found quite dramatic for a Korean drama. As the drama unfolded, I witnessed Ji-sung's complex inner acting as he ultimately fell in love with the woman who killed him. Ji-sung's performance, which began with revenge and then embraced the love, was a highly complex and emotionally draining performance unlike any other drama, and it convincingly portrayed the character's transformation. Another highlight of this drama was the editing and music. The editing at the beginning of each episode, in particular, captivated viewers with its understated yet mysterious atmosphere. The cross-cutting between past and present fully explains the story, helping viewers approach the truth. The music also makes this drama a delight to the ears: Ailee's heartbreaking "Tears Stole My Heart" and Nabi's "Incurable Disease," the soothing love song "That Person" by Gu Ja-myung, and the orchestral background score that plays as the story approaches hidden secrets. Love, betrayal, revenge, despair, forgiveness, and truth—everything is resolved, and the drama unfolds with a compelling and smooth flow, from beginning to end. If you're looking for a break from the typical romantic drama and a blend of mystery and melodrama, I highly recommend watching this drama right now!
